Description
There is darkness and there is light. There is doubt and hope in life and pain and joy. 
This is photographic series that is inspired by the painter of light JMW Turner, where form is lost, boundaries are blurred between the material and the etherial and there is always a strong chiarescoeco.  My lens is directly aimed at sources of natural or artificial light to explore the tension between light and darkness as a metaphor for faith. Prioritising the impressions of isolation, uncertainty and mystery as feelings over precise representation.

"Inspired by light both literally and figuratively"

With a background studying Theology, I am drawn to the relationship between light and mankind’s understanding of the spiritual. My practice centres on photography as a way of engaging with both the physical and symbolic qualities of light. I am fascinated by its dual nature as a wave and a particle, its intersection in science, technology and religion and how it has played a part in humanity’s ongoing search for meaning.

My work explores the tension between light and darkness as a metaphor for faith, and for the dissolution of ego. These themes reflect a personal journey; an attempt to translate internal states into external form. I often allow shapes and figures to dissolve or bleed into their surroundings, mirroring moments of transcendence or emotional release.

The common thread in my work is the presence of light and shadow, both literally and metaphorically. As Jun’ichirōTanizaki wrote, “Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.”
