Description

"Having predominantly worked as a commission-based artist, this is the first piece I have done for myself in four years. It is also the first piece of my 'Through the Window' series! I wanted to paint a series from the outside looking in as I've always thought you can tell so much about someone's life by just catching a glimpse through their window. This particular scene is a combination of the architecture of Marrakesh and the washing lines in Naples.

As always, I have named my painting after a song. I had a fixation on this particular song (by Claudia Mori) a few years ago, I had no idea what it meant but was happy it was in Italian as I'd always romanticized Italy. Since, I have google translated the title and it came out as 'It will never dry again' which I thought was fitting for a painting of a washing line. Unfortunately, google translate was wrong and it actually means 'It won't happen again' but I'm keeping the title regardless."

The gallery is small, but it punches well above its weight. Friendly, expert and hugely knowledgeable about the artists it represents and displays, there is always something of interest, at different price levels.

The Artist

Maddy Morgan

Maddy Morgan is a self-taught artist based in London. She studied Maths at Newcastle University, alongside a year abroad at the University of Hong Kong, where she focused on History of Art and Gender Studies.

Maddy currently manages Arty Corner Gallery in Wimbledon while simultaneously developing her own artistic practice. Having painted and drawn from a young age, she began taking on private commissions at 18. In recent years, she has moved away from commission-based work to focus on developing her own collections.

Working predominantly in oils, Maddy creates textured paintings using palette knives. Her work is shaped by a fascination with the slower rhythms and everyday pleasures of European life. Her recent café scenes takes inspiration from the Italian expression il dolce far niente translating to “the sweetness of doing nothing” - capturing unhurried moments of conversation, coffee and food.

Through her paintings, Maddy hopes to celebrate the beauty found in ordinary moments and create work for those who appreciate a slower pace of life.
